I've been so many places
In my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and
I'm singing this song for you

I know your image of me
Is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly
But darlin' can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Darlin' can't you please see through me
Cause we're alone now and
I'm singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets
Of the truth with holding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better
And if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
Cause my love is in there hiding

[Verse 3]

I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life
You are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and
I was singing this song for you

[Repeat chorus and verse 3]

We were alone and
I was singing this song for you

In my opinion, Donnie Hathaway's rendition of this song is the greatest secular song ever performed...especially the live version. He ifs perhaps the most under-celebrated artist ever.

I'm sorry, ive never heard of Donny Hathaway. But I think alittle credit needs to go to Leon Russel. After all he did write and compose it and made it a hit.

I wish i'd sung this song some more for my wife of 37 years. Going to sing now, before my life is over. This is an invitation to mature love.

Cuando las luces del escenario se apagan.
y las voces se callan y solo el sonido de la lluvia.
me acompaña, canto una cancion para ti.

This is a man who loves his woman deeply. Although he may not tell her often enough; he sometimes might even get distracted due to his career (traveling round at concerts) but he hopes she can feel, see and remember that he would not want to exchange her love for him nor his appreciation and love for her for nothing in this world. He is hoping that she'll remember that he tried to pour his heart out for her even in this one instance with the hope too that even if he passes before her she will never for get him and what she meant to him.
