Refrain}
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say
{Refrain}
Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say
{Refrain}
No!
Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/k/kansas/carry_on_my_wayward_son.html ]
This song is awsome and so is the beat! Kansas rocks! I love the refrain.

I think this song is about the prodigal, one who needs to find his way back to where he belongs. "now your life's no longer empty"
"surely heaven waits for you"

It's about a man becoming a christina and trying to live a life as jesus would. In the end he has done his good work in spite of the troubles and pain of life. Now he can peacefully go to heaven...
It think that this song is just about somebody has had to cope with alot in his life and tries do to anything he can to get his life back on track. After this, he can rest. This is my favortie song and it just says that whatever life throws at you, you can always get over it.

In my humble oppinion, i think this song is about personal truth and finding/creating love and acceptance of one's self. The very fact that the son is "wayward" tells us that he is engaged in a desparate search. To this end, it is much more universal in meaning and much more applicable to all who hear it than any war protest or specific aim.
The young man is fighting a battle within himself which only appears to be external. He's really looking for himself amid all the human debris. Fortunately for him, he has a conscience that keeps him searching and withholds any permission he may seek to give in. Whatever or whomever he may be tempted by and the consequences therein are subjective to the listener. But no matter the circumstances or conditions, the quest is the same.
He may be struggling with perental/governmental/false idiologies. Or he may be fighting a simple but complete loss of personal direction. Regardless of whatever the individual listener uses to customize the song, the innerself is always there in the refrain to keep him honest.
This is an extreme over-simplification of a deeply magical work of art. But i believe the conscientious bottom line is: stand tall, keep serching. When you finally know who you are and can rise above where you've been, you will know peace.
In some form, at some level, with no way of knowing the outcome, we all make this same journey on our way to becomming men.

As with all works of art, the meaning can take on significance to the current listener. But the song was originally written as a vietnam war protest, the pointless nature of that particular war to a generation that was repeatedly lied to by the gov't and conned into believing in the "just war" hypothesis.
The chorus are the voices of the angels or spirits or even the redeemer himself soothing and comforting the 'dying' hero (remember it doesnt ahve to be a physical death, as death is a symbol for a moment of transcendence) . The 'i'person tells of his quest for enlightenment and fullfillment and of his hubris and deciet, his strengths and his doubts.
'epic' lyrics like this often function as a metaphore for psychedelic or spiritual/mystical l experiences often inspired by drugs, eastern philosphies and western occult traditions. Typical of its time when it became clear that the haze of the post woodstock generation was finally clearing up, and people, especially musicians (the self declared demi-gods of that era) were making up the score.
This song matches the tv show supernatural!!! I luv this song the band rocks and so does the song, supernatural wouldn't be a tv serious if this song wasn't on it!!!
