This, I have to say, is the greatest song ever written.
It's clearly about a guy who is away from his lover and is "sleeping around" so to speak - but it doesnt mean anything because "he has nothing to prove for its you that i'd die to defend". Even though Jon appears to be a cheating guy in this song, you still feel for him which makes the lyrics so brilliant. He is basically saying that even though he won't be alone, he still feels lonely because its her he loves and wants to be with and the mistresses mean nothing to him. He even considers sleeping with the barkeeper but "i'd laugh so hard I think i'd die" says it all and is definitely a comedic line which still makes me smile everytime I hear it.
Some say the lyrics are about his dead girlfriend but I completely disagree with this. He even says part way through the song that he speaks to her over the "payphone" - which is why he says he'd give anything to see through it so he could not only hear her but see her too.
