I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

And still I dreamed she'll come to me
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So diff'rent from this hell I'm living
So diff'rent now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

This song is about realizing that the life you thought you would have lived (dreamed) has, in reality, turned into a nightmare, by the choices you have made. It expresses the boundless optimism of youth, only to turn into a heartbreaking song about lost hope & regrets. The lyrics touch my heart and soul completely. "i dreamed a dream" will be my epitaph.

The expansive dreams of youth--the hunger and appetite for things with no thought for the consequences--the heartbreak of lost love in a time when its loss is felt more deeply than in mature years and yet in those mature years there is a looking backing and wondering about the things that "could have been but are not. "

Jeff paid his rent today at eleven o'clock in the morning. This is what this song is about. I believe it's about Jeff, paying his rent and dreaming that his life could be different; that he could live in Candyland with all his candy buddies: Lollipops, candy canes, chocolatey goodness. But, alas, his life is a horrid nightmare because he is living in one of the worst cities in the world: Sydney, Australia. It has the world's worst economy, worst hunger problem, and worst obesity. :p

A beautiful combination of two beautiful voices. A very touching rendition, that brought a different spin to the meaning of the words.
