Death Cab For Cutie – What Sarah Said lyrics

And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU that reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breathes as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak of the LCD took you a little farther away from me
Amongst the vending machines and year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye

It stung like a violent wind that out memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds
And I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all

Then I looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the TV entertained itself
Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room just nervous paces bracing for bad news
Then the nurse comes round and everyone lifts their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said
That love is watching someone die

So who's going to watch you die?...

Well, it seems to me that he is singing about a personal experience. Perhaps he lost a loved one. But I found the last line very touching. When he asks "Who's going to watch you die?", he is asking who is that will be there for you, loving you, caring for you. All the way until the end.
He could also mean die in a metaphorical sense in that sometimes we can break down so far during times of crisis or other personal life changing events. But are we all so blessed to have someone be there with us during these "deaths". To help bring us back to life. To pray for us. To believe in us. To love us.? I don't think the song is bad at all. I think it's absolutely beautiful! :)

This song has a really sad meaning. It means that even though it hurts, and it couses you personal pain, that true love is wtching someone die, that true love is always being there for someone, no matter how much it hurts you, it is saying that you will be there when they die, because that's what true love is, putting them before yourself. It is very sweet, but very sad.
