You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you. [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/c/crosby_stills_nash/teach_your_children.html ]
And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
It's about life, yours at the time. And how you feel. It's also about your kids at the time and how they feel, than we grow, looking at the past as just a good by. Life is in the moment. Make the most of it

I listened to this over and over as a young adult, enjoying just the tune. Now in my 60's, whenever i question my 28 year old child's choices, i can smile and have comfort knowing that he is following his own way, as did i. And i know that he and i taught each other well.

Help others to understand your view of life. Don't expect or demand their understanding or tolerance.

At a time when north american youth were distancing themselves from the "establishment" in every possible way, and standing for everything to which they thought parents objected, csn wrote a beautfiul song to try and help parents and children connect and understand each other.
