Crosby, Stills & Nash – Helplessly Hoping lyrics
Helplessly hoping
Her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses
Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of good-bye
Wordlessly watching
He waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams
He worries
Did he hear a good-bye? Or even hello?
They are one person
They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other
Stand by the stairway
You'll see something
Certain to tell you confusion has it's cost
Love isn't lying
It's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello
They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other

Three people in the song. Two are in a relationship, the third (the harlequin) a guy who wishes he could have a shot at a relationship with her. She's sort of playing him, encouraging him to stick around for her amusement (harlequin) but he doesn't really have a shot. He hangs around for the emotional crumbs she leaves him (hovers nearby, awaiting a word). Tries to leave (runs, wishing he coulf fly) because deep inside, he realizes it's hopeless? But he's weak and keeps coming back. He's friends with the other guy and she's playing him. They are one person (as the three close friends), they are two alone (the couple), they are three together (all three are still individuals who can choose to stay or go) and they are for each other: a karmic lesson being worked through on all their parts.

Very skillful lyrics by Steve Stills. I think the song has elements of being jilted by a lover or wishing for the affections of a certain lady but being toyed with. There could be speculation of who exactly the song is referring to since it's likely that Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is about his sometime girlfriend Judy Collins. This could be about her also or any number of females he was interested in.

`i believe that there are four people who love each other and can coexist as one. `so there... how bout them apples?
This has taken me several eons to figure out. their is always some form of cheating with just a couple. `why not be honest. I'm not a Morman because they are sexist and use women as sex slaves and baby makers. The true marriage of two people that live happily ever after is a lie. Their are such hard times between two people that they need a shoulder to cry on. A truly sensitive and loving person needs someone 24 hours a day. One person is not capable of doing that alone.
