hoping Her
harlequin hovers nearby Awaiting
a word Gasping
at glimpses Of
gentle true spirit He
runs wishing, he could fly Only
to trip at the sound of good-bye Wordlessly
watching He
waits by the window And
wonders At
the empty place inside Heartlessly
helping himself to her bad dreams He
worries Did
he hear a good-bye Or? even hello They?
are one person They
are one person They
are two alone They
are three together They
are for each other Stand
by the stairway You'll
see something Certain
to tell you confusion has it's cost Love
isn't lying It's
loose in a lady who lingers Saying
she is lost And
choking on hello They
are one person They
are two alone They
are three together They
are for each other

Three people in the song. Two are in a relationship, the third (the harlequin) a guy who wishes he could have a shot at a relationship with her. She's sort of playing him, encouraging him to stick around for her amusement (harlequin) but he doesn't really have a shot. He hangs around for the emotional crumbs she leaves him (hovers nearby, awaiting a word). Tries to leave (runs, wishing he coulf fly) because deep inside, he realizes it's hopeless?but he's weak and keeps coming back. He's friends with the other guy and she's playing him. They are one person ( as the three close friends), they are two alone (the couple), they are three together (all three are still individuals who can choose to stay or go) and they are for each other: a karmic lesson being worked through on all their parts.

I think it means the relationship isn't going well but they don't want to give it up. definition of a harlequin is :A mute character in traditional pantomime, typically masked and dressed in a diamond-patterned costume.

Could be the guy feels like a harlequin (clown) hovering (reminiscing) on their relationship and how he messed up. By the time he noticed or thought about her, she was gone. Then he wondered if she said goodbye or hello. Helping himself to her bad dreams i think means he was thinking how he hurt her ? Who knows but its interesting choice of lyrics and i love this song!!

Harlequin was a clown, like a court jester. He hovers at her side, exists to amuse her, and is waiting for her to tell him to perform. He is stunned by the beauty of her spirit and it makes him feel like he's flying with joy, then he trips and is brought back to earth at her telling him goodbye.

I don't think he is saying one thing or another. He is expressing the feeling of fear and unsure-ness that haunts those moments of union experienced with another. The cruel and mysterious paradox that union can be felt, but our minds remind us that we can never be totally sure of the feelings of another. ?
