Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life, with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him and listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
A stranger to my eyes

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life, with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life, with his words
Killing me softly with his song

He sang as if he knew me
In all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me as if I wasn't there
And he just kept on singing
Singing clear and strong

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life, with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I think it's obviously about the song, not the singer. I don't think she's in love with the singer or thinks the song is from him to her.. It's about the impact a song can have on you and how it can just bring out all your feelings and seem like it was written directly for you. The song the man is singing relates with her, every word. It's like he's "singing -her- life with his words" And it's bringing out a lot of the pain she has been feeling because she's like Wow.. that's me that's how I feel.. But it's "killing her softly" because it's bringing out her pain but it's beautiful music being beautifully sang. She feels embarrassed because the words are so exact that she feels like he's reading her "love letters outloud." So to sum it up it's basically about that feeling you get listening to music when it just hits every part of something you're going through word for word, like it was meant for you. I think people aren't looking at it broad enough and are trying to interpret it like it's meaning exactly what it's saying, like if the man is literally reading her love letters or like she wishes the song he was singing was about her because she loves him or something. From the lyrics I don't see that as being the case and never thought of it like that from the first moment I heard the song.

I think it is talking about those songs that when you hear them they sound as if they were talking to you and sometimes it's just to much how you can relate with them that can softly kill you xx

Maybe the song means litteraly what it means? Maybe there is no deep meaning? Perhaps when she is listening to a boy sing a deep song (as the lyrics describe) the song he is singing is describing her pains and fears in her life and is tugging at her emotions? This may be what she means when she says "he sang as if he knew me"?

The most brilliant version of this song.. ♥

The song is kinda broad. One has to sit down and think beyond the simple lyrics. The dominating factor is that the one singing is in great pain.

I think it talks about a woman who felt a sudden strong emotion for a young guy or a guy his age but then the guy pretended to love her at first then later n revealed that he was not really into her. The critical part i think is when the woman still believes that the songs the guy sing are still for her but she know they are but songs with empty meaning.

    Just an opinion.

The song she hears this young boy singing really speaks to her, and she can completely relate, but the boy doesnt even seem to notice how its affecting her.
