City And Colour – What Makes A Man lyrics

I can hear my train comin'
It's a lonesome and distant cry
I can hear my train comin'
Now I'm runnin' for my life
What makes a man walk away from his mind?
I think I know
I think I might know

I can feel the wind blowin'
It's sending shivers down my spine
I can feel the wind blowin'
It shakes the trees and the power lines
What makes a man spend his whole life in disguise?
I think I know
I think I might know

I think I might know
I think I might know, oh oh

I can see the sun settin'
It's casting shadows on the sea
I can see the sun, it's setting
It's getting colder, starting to freeze
What makes a man want to break a heart with ease?
I think I know
I think I might know

I think I might know
I think I might know, oh oh

Well I can hear my train comin'
Looks like time is not on my side
Well I can hear my train comin'
I'm still runnin' for my life
What makes a man pray, when he's about to die?
I think I know
I think I might know

What makes a man, I think I might
What makes a man, I think I might know, oh oh, oh oh

What makes a man, I think I might know
What makes a man, I think I might know, woah oh

The song is about a man who is facing fear with the realization that it's his time and he's going to die. He then thinks about his past: how he has made bad decisions (walk away from his mind) never been himself (in disguise), how he has never found love (break a heart with ease). Then finally as the tempo picks up and his train (death) is catching up with him he says "what makes a man pray when he's about to die, i think i might know" because he himself is praying, repenting of things he listed before and regretting not having more time. What makes a man is the question through-out the whole song, however he now knows the answer to life's questions because he is dying. I think this song is truly beautiful & hints to that we don't want to die in this desperate state, we need to live a beautiful life that in our dying day we will feel peace and not this desperate feeling.

When a person has been through hurts and pain it send them into a different mind set. Creating emotions and actions that no one thought they would ever do. It is about the expereinces in our lives that can cause us to become the person we are today and who we will become. We all have a time to live and a time to die. We are to take what we have learned and see for ourselves what life is all about. We don't know untill we are there expereinces those same expereicnes that others have been through. By the grace of god we can be lifted up and renewed once again.

You may be living your whole life as a lie. You know what you're doing is wrong but, you don't stop because you can't help yourself. Frankly, you don't want to stop. There's no threat. But as time passes, if you get the chance to know that your own death may be coming your way, and it sets it that you will meet your maker, you are finally scared and seek forgiveness when your time has come and has run out.
