I can hear my train comin'
It's a lonesome and distant cry
I can hear my train comin'
Now I'm runnin' for my life
What makes a man walk away from his mind?
I think I know
I think I might know
I can feel the wind blowin'
It's sending shivers down my spine
I can feel the wind blowin'
It shakes the trees and the power lines
What makes a man spend his whole life in disguise?
I think I know
I think I might know
I think I might know
I think I might know, oh oh [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/c/city_and_colour/what_makes_a_man.html ]
I can see the sun settin'
It's casting shadows on the sea
I can see the sun, it's setting
It's getting colder, starting to freeze
What makes a man want to break a heart with ease?
I think I know
I think I might know
I think I might know
I think I might know, oh oh
Well I can hear my train comin'
Looks like time is not on my side
Well I can hear my train comin'
I'm still runnin' for my life
What makes a man pray, when he's about to die?
I think I know
I think I might know
What makes a man, I think I might
What makes a man, I think I might know, oh oh, oh oh
What makes a man, I think I might know
What makes a man, I think I might know, woah oh
I think that this song is about recognising who you have become and trying to make sense of how you got to particular crossroads in your life.

Its about drugs. Drugs, or love. They're almost the same thing anyway.

You may be living your whole life as a lie. You know what you're doing is wrong but, you don't stop because you can't help yourself. Frankly, you don't want to stop. There's no threat. But as time passes, if you get the chance to know that your own death may be coming your way, and it sets it that you will meet your maker, you are finally scared and seek forgiveness when your time has come and has run out.

Oh yeah baby. It means a lot of stuff, but you might never know the real thing, cause the real thing is the real thing and whenever the real thing gets real, sht it just gets real. You kno what i mean?

The song is about a man who is facing fear with the realization that it's his time and he's going to die. He then thinks about his past: how he has made bad decisions (walk away from his mind) never been himself (in disguise), how he has never found love (break a heart with ease). Then finally as the tempo picks up and his train (death) is catching up with him he says "what makes a man pray when he's about to die, i think i might know" because he himself is praying, repenting of things he listed before and regretting not having more time. What makes a man is the question through-out the whole song, however he now knows the answer to life's questions because he is dying. I think this song is truly beautiful & hints to that we don't want to die in this desperate state, we need to live a beautiful life that in our dying day we will feel peace and not this desperate feeling.

The train is not a metaphor. Whenever there's a train in a song, it can only mean a physical train.

The train is not a real one, is just a moment in his life that is coming and he knows that

Its about a man who's faced with a dilemma: he has to take a train out of town, but he's afraid of trains, probably on account of something from his childhood. So the train is coming, he knows he has to take it, but he's horrified. So he begins to run. But then in running, he bumps into something and his mind pops out of his head and is sitting on the ground. Now mindless, the man begins to walk instead of run. Simultaneously, the wind is starting to pick up, power lines are shaking, there is a storm coming through. The sun is setting. The train station is obviously near the ocean. The man now realizes that the storm is really starting to threaten his life, although, his brain on the pavement a few paces back has also given him quite an immediate expiration date. Lacking a brain, he decides to dress up in disguise, as a man with a brain, although he walked away from it awhile back. Meanwhile the storm is picking up. The train is coming. And this guy is just wanting to figure out what the hell is going on ever since the collision before. But lacking a mind, he cannot be sure of anything that is going on. He says "i think i might know" because he cannot be certain. This song is about an episode of a fictitious man's life, who may or may not be hallucinating
