This hallway's dark and empty
Just miles and miles of endless road
I've got a sickness pounding in my head
I'm at the mercy of the ghosts
But what it would take to live
As if I would not another day
To live without despair
And to be without desdain
How can I instill such hope
But be left with none of my own?
What if I could sing
Just one song
And it might save somebody's life [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/c/city_and_colour/hope_for_now.html ]
I sought after
After reasons to stay
I was lost
I was lost
Then the sky turned black
And the rains poured down
I was waiting
Waiting to be found
Oh, no
How can I instill such hope
But be left with none of my own?
What if I could sing
Just one song
And it might save somebody's life
Then I would sing
All that I can sing
Because that is when
When I feel that I'm not just counting time
Oh, and I sing
All that I can sing
Maybe just for the moment
Things would seem all right
It's about having no hope for yourself, and that in singing he is giving hope to others even though he cannot give hope to himself. He is thinking that in singing his songs and giving hope to others he will find hope in himself. I know that when i first heard this song it related to how i felt in the darkest point in my life, when i was going to commit suicide, when i was waiting to be found, i wanted someone to notice how i felt, and what i was about to do... I wanted someone to save me. I think the song is also about finding meaning in your life so your'e just not counting time until you die.

Obviously, this song is about hope- hence the title. Singing allows people to connect with others. In this song, he wants to sing to give hope to others, even though he cannot give hope to himself. It also talks about how he is hopeless. I think he's lonely and hopeless on the path he is currently on, but he must stay on this path to keep singing, to spread hope to others.

I feel its about feeling depressed/depression
Dark and empty- how any one with the illness might feel,
Sickness pounding in my head- becoming consumed by overbearing thoughts etc,
"im at the mercy of the gohst" maybe my favourite line i think the writer is refering to the 'holy ghost' being at its mercy, meaning having no understanding of what he is left to do now and handing it over leaving it in the hands of that higher thing that may be there leading the way.
The whole song is written beautifully i think its amazing,

Dallas as commented in many interviews that he feels grateful that his songs give hope to his fans, and he appreciates that people all over the world can identify with him. So this song is talking about the hope his songs instill in listeners, yet he has none left for himself:
'how can i instill such hope
But be left with none of my own?
What if i could sing
Just one song
And it might save somebody's life
Then i would sing
All that i can sing'

I think the song is more realistic then it might seem. Being a singer/songwriter myself, i think it shows the loneliness of being on the road and feeling lost and never home. And that the only time he can feel free and not have his mind filled with doubt is when he is performing. That for him, singing is the greatest form of escapism.

I'm pretty sure the first line is: this highway is dark and empty

Its about feeling guilty for something you'd done in the past and even if not to help yourself out, you help others lives so they dont have to feel the pain and guilt that you have to live with.

The ability to know, without any proof, that life will get better. You wont always be broken.
