Christmas Songs – Sweet Little Jesus Boy lyrics

Sweet little Jesus Boy
They made You be born in a manguh [manger]
Sweet little Holy chil'
Didn't know who You wus [was]
Didn't know You'd come to save us Lawd
To take our sins away

Our eyes wus bline [was blind]
We couldn't see
We didn't know who You wus [was]
Long time ago You wus bawn [was born]
Bawn in a manguh [manger] low

Sweet little Jesus Boy
De worl' [the world] treat You mean, Lawd
Treat me mean too
But please, Suh, fuhgive [Sir, forgive] us Lawd
We didn't know 'twas You

Sweet little Jesus Boy
Bawn [born] long time ago
Sweet little Holy chil'
An' we didn't know who You wus [was]

It seems to me that the author was in deep pain, caused from some sort of abusive relationship. Could have been the cruelty and great injustice of slavery or the abusive relationships between spouses or between parents and children. This pain could have been experienced personally or being lived vicariously through a loved one or acquaintance. Anyway it seems that the author knew of The Lord personally, and all the suffering He, Himself, went through for us when He was on earth. He found strength and encouragement by reflecting on Jesus, and on His great love and sacrifice for us. He say's also that when we treat each other so poorly, it is a direct indication that we don't know Jesus. If we did our behavior would mimic His. No bigotry, abuse, prejudice, inequity would be reflected in us towards each other. We would indeed and action love, walk and talk as Jesus did while He lived on earth.
