I would have given you all of my heart
But there's someone who's torn it apart
And she's taking almost all that I've got
But if you want, I'll try to love again
Baby I'll try to love again but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
When it comes to lovin' me she's worse
But when it comes to being loved she's first
That's how I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
Cause I'm sure gonna give you a try
And if you want, I'll try to love again
But baby, I'll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

'Cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
When it comes to lovin' me she's worse
But when it comes to being loved she's first
That's how I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

This song is about a guy who's hooking up with a girl while he still has a broken heart because of another girl. He loved girl 1 and he's using girl 2 to help him forget. He's singing to girl 2. He wants her by his side to help him dry the tears he's cried. He promises he'll try to love again.
It's not a very good thing to do to girl 2, but it happens. People use others.
This is a song you would never want to have a new lover sing to you.

Sometimes, i.m.h.o, when someone covers anyones song, it's o.k. at best. Rod's version is better. Cheryl Crow's is excellent, as well, just as in the case with Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" done by James Taylor.

The first cut is always the deepest but let go of that past, don't let the person you are with suffer because of some perception of the past. :) 'try to love again'

First cut is the deepest, everyone who experience it knows it's true. Next serious time you're ready, it won't hurt as much when it ends again.
