Cats in the Cradle
By Harry Chapin

A child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking before I knew it and as he grew
He said, "I'm gonna be like you, Dad,
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Dad, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then,
You know we'll have a good time then.

My son turned ten just the other day
He said "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on lets play
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do" He said "that's okay"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm going to be like him"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Dad, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then,
You know we'll have a good time then.

Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile

"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Son, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then.

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said "Id like to see you if you don't mind"
He said "Id love to Dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new jobs a hassle, and the kids have the flu.
But It's sure nice talking to you, Dad,
It's been sure nice talking to you........"
And as I hung up the phone it had occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me,
My boy was just like me..............

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, Son, I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then.

This song has made me cry since i was a child. My husband likes this song but it does remind him of his own father. It was our goal not to have our children feel that way about their dad. There were many times that my husband had to be busy with work, but he always made time for them. Far more time than our fathers made for us--i'm talking about full-on homework, sports, fishing, camping, vacations, talking, special dinners. It's a little disappointing to find that they ask for our help but they don't make time for us in their lives--quite the opposite of the way we did it but so similar to the sad song.

I think its just the real life we are on now, fathers working or doing things on their interests and children wanting to share more time with them and then when children grown up they do exactly the same to their children. Its just a circle

My father used to listen to his music as did my mother. Just one month after i was born it was too late, he was killed in a very bad car accident.

Police said that the singer was on his way to a concert.

He died on july 16, 1981.

Only one month and one day old.

I was too young to know him.

We actually manifest our "fathers" consciously or sub-consciously. The thing is I think we underestimate the role of dads in our lives and how much the child look up to the father as a role model; as the centre of our universe till it's too late. There's a sense of regret, of being too late in recognising that our children are moulded by our time, love and affirmation for them at the end. Our children reflect and echo uncannily our fathers' successes and failures. What you have strove for all your life can become too much to bear at the end of the day.

i think that the meaning is that your child will proubly grow up like you and that you should speand as much time as you can with them
