Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize - don't patronize me
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/b/bonnie_raitt/i_cant_make_you_love_me.html ]
I'll close my eyes, then I won't see
The love you don't feel when you're holding me
Morning will come and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't

My favorite line in this song is "ill close my eyes, then i won't see the love you don't feel when you're holding me"... Very powerful and true in many relationships!

When i first heard this song i was going through some very trying times. My heart was broken into a million little peices!!! This song encompassed everything i was feeling at that time and became my mantra. It also made me stronger!!! I knew that i wasnt the only woman in this same situation and that i too could come out of it.
One of the most heartbreaking love songs ever. She is saying goodbye "here in the dark in these final hours" to someone she loves; someone who didn't return her love. She is honestly accepting a heartbreak and a goodbye, honestly accepting the pain, trading everything--even her dignity--for one last night. If you understand this song, you probably won't be able to hear it without crying. Bonnie raitt performed this song in a concert to say goodbye to don kirschner when he died. She's got courage.
