Bob Dylan – Boots Of Spanish Leather lyrics
Oh I'm sailin' away my own true love
I'm sailin' away in the morning
Is there something I can send you from across the sea
From the place that I'll be landing?

No, there's nothin' you can send me, my own true love
There's nothin' I wish to be ownin'
Just carry yourself back to me unspoiled
From across that lonesome ocean.

Oh, but I just thought you might want something fine
Made of silver or of golden
Either from the mountains of Madrid
Or from the coast of Barcelona?

Oh, but if I had the stars from the darkest night
And the diamonds from the deepest ocean
I'd forsake them all for your sweet kiss
For that's all I'm wishin' to be ownin'.

That I might be gone a long time
And it's only that I'm askin'
Is there something I can send you to remember me by
To make your time more easy passin'?

Oh, how can, how can you ask me again
It only brings me sorrow
The same thing I want from you today
I would want again tomorrow.

I got a letter on a lonesome day
It was from her ship a-sailin'
Saying I don't know when I'll be comin' back again
It depends on how I'm a-feelin'.

Well, if you, my love, must think that-a-way
I'm sure your mind is roarmin'
I'm sure your thoughts are not with me
But with the country to where you're goin'.

So take heed, take heed of the western wind
Take heed of the stormy weather
And yes, there's something you can send back to me
Spanish boots of Spanish leather.

Obviuosly, he wants his love to just come back home to him, and she's (nicely) reminding him, warning--she'll be gone for a long time, maybe forever, and as he realizes this is true, he grasps on to all she is leaving him-- a chance to have a gift from her, and I think he also finally concedesto the gift as a desperation to keep himself in her mind, the only possibility of hanging on to her in any way he can. And something to remember her by, and tragiclally will ultimately be a martyred gift--something he will eventually use as her surrogate for lost love.

The trip she is taking may be one of a non-physical nature. Their relationship may be taking a turn for the worst and she can feel herself becoming distant. She is not able to give him, emotionally, what she had in the past to keep them from drifting apart. Since is not able to give him or the relationship what he needs, she continues to ask what is it you want from me because I can't give you what you want. Finally realizing that she is drifting further and further away from him, he decides to accept whatever she can give him from her vantage point in the relationship but also warns her that this could be an unhealthy way to carry on a relationsip

I'm not as gloomy as you guys. She obviously loves him but she has to do this (i.e., leave). She wants him to know that she loves him, and yes feels guilty about needing to leave, so she offers the gift. He can't stop her and he finally accepts this, and by extension accepts her, by accepting her gift. But I feel ultimately they will be together either by her coming home or him going to Spain...
