Pearls and swine bereft of me
Long and weary my road has been
I was lost in the cities
Alone in the hills
No sorrow or pitty
For leaving I feel
I am not your rolling wheels
I am a highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/audioslave/i_am_the_highway.html ]
Friends and liars
Don't wait for me
Cause I'll get on
All by myself
I put millions of miles
Under my heels
And still too close to you
I feel
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night
The night
I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightining
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night

It's a song about him still feeling attached to the person he loved, but he's trying to show that they are different and the relationship won't work.

To me it means the end of a relationship. But do we ever cut all ties?...

Its christ reflecting upon the world post resurrsection, then like now people still dont get it. - per cornell hint, the autumn moon comes and goes but the night is allways there. So much for the left alone theory..

I think it's a blow-off song... He's telling someone "you're on your own. "

I think this song is really cool! Who cares what it means. Does every song have to have some deep meaning? Why can't we just enjoy the music and sing along, without having to anilize everything, or find meaning to it?
If u really know or have listened to cris cornells music through soundgarden or on his own , his lyrics are deep and amazing really! As a man who fought addiction and his his friends die from it, alot of his lyrics i believe stem from this. To me he is one of the greatest and at times underated writers in music. Love this song as many from the past
My personal belief is that this song is a smack at his former soundgarden band mates,he is saying that they did not want to move forward with their music as much as he did, which was the reason for the band splitting up in the first place, and that he was going to take the journey without them, which makes him "the highway".
I think the message that cornell is delivering here,
is that of one who was being taken for granted not seen fully for who he is, but seen as something less. When in truth he knew he was much more then what he was seen as. But i think in order for him to show that person[s] that he was much much more he put millions of miles under his heels and even though he knew he would be okay without that person[s] making him feel less of himself he still felt close to them because they are what got him there to state that he was something much more then what they knew.
I think he is feeling used and seen in a narrow vision of what he really is. Several times he says that he is not something specific, but rather something much more. He feels no regret for leaving the people who treat him that way. And rightly so!
I definetly agree with your meaning. Cornell is saying to someone that you cannot see the rest of me and that i am the right path to take, perhaps opposed to someone else. I simply are not your wheels, your ride, our wind that just push forward i am the highway, take my path.
