Do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now
Or, darling, have you started feeling old yet
Don't worry, I'm sure that you're still breaking hearts
With the efficiency that only youth can harness
And do you still think love is a laserquest
Or do you take it all more seriously
I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had
But you're always busy being make-believe
And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there
Or have somebody's good-night kisses got that covered

Well I'm not being honest, I pretend that you were just some lover
Now I can't think of there without thinking of you
I doubt that comes as a surprise
And I can't think of anything to dream about
I can't find anywhere to hide
And when I'm hanging on by the rings around my eyes
And I convince myself I need another
And for a minute it gets easier to pretend that you were just some lover

When I'm pipe and slippers and rocking chair
Singing dreadful songs about soma
Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover
Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover

I see this as a girl who did not see the relationship seriously.. And now he wonders if she has grown up but he just rather look the other way and think of that relationship as one of a lovers and as if no emotion was put into it.. Sorryfor.my bad english

This song is saying he finds it easier to just think he was just someone he had and loved once nothing more. He is trying to convience to himself that he's okay; when he obviously isn't. However he can't escape her, so he just pretends she ''some lover''. Ad it's amazing and appeals to me very much!

I like how he says "pretending you were just some lover" because he is implying that his heartbreak will be easier to get over if he pretends that this girl was just a girl he shared a one night stand with and nothing more. This song and in fact nearly the whole album kills me emotionally because i can genuinely feel alex turners heartbreak being communicated in every single lyrics in every song. Ah so amazing.

I agree with audrius about the lyrics.

Because alex says "when i'm pipe, and slippers, and rocking chair... ", which means "when i'm old" and he's thinking about the girl he loves and was with when they were young. So, it suits much more that the lyrics after that are: "... Singing dreadful songs about summer. Will i've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover? "

It's "songs about SUMMER", not "something". And "WILL" instead of "well". Officially on recent issue of Q. A beautiful sad song about an old love.
