Thought I saw you in the battleship
But it was only a look a like
She was nothing but a vision trick
Under the warning light
She was close, close enough to be your ghost
But my chances turned to toast
When I asked her if I could call her your name

I thought I saw you in the rusty hook
Huddled up in wicker chair
I wandered up for a closer look
And kissed who ever was sitting there

She was close, and she held me very tightly
Till I asked awfully politely, please
Can I call you her name

And I elongated my lift home,
Yeah I let him go the long way round
I smelt your scent on the seatbelt
And kept my shortcuts to myself

I thought I saw you in the parrots beak
Messing with the smoke alarm
It was too loud for me to hear her speak
And she had a broken arm

It was close, so close that the walls were wet
And she wrote it out in letraset
No you can't call me her name

Tell me where's your hiding place
I'm worried I'll forget your face
And I've asked everyone
And I'm beginning to think I imagined you all along

I elongated my lift home
Yeah I let him go the long way round
I smelt your scent on the seatbelt
And kept my shortcuts to myself

I saw your sister in the cornerstone
On the phone to the middle man

When I saw that she was on her own
I thought she might understand
She was close, well you couldn't get much closer
She said I'm really not supposed to but yes,
You can call me anything you want

He's looking for a girl that looks like his ex-girlfriend and at the end of the song, he sees a girl on the "cornerstone" or the corner, aka the red light district. She's on the phone to the middle man (a pimp) and she says "you can call me anything you like" because she's a prostitute.

This song about a guy that has lost a girl. All the place names have references to pirates because she is his "lost treasure".

He meets a girl at a club / bar then the night ends with him only having her name. He then goes on to see if he can find this wonder girl of his... Then goes looking for her in other clubs / bars: 'i thought i saw you in the battleship', but he can't fine this special girl: 'but it was only a look a like'. Then calling the girls he meets by the name he was given, which the girls he meets do not like: 'but my chances turned to toast when i asked her if i could call you her name. '
He continues the pursuit of this woman by visiting many bars: 'rusty hook, battleship' in search of her...
Then beleives he can not find her: 'tell me where's your hiding place (can't find her)
I'm worried i'll forget your face (has'nt seen her for a while, all he has to remember her by)
And i've asked everyone (asking if anyone knows her)
And i'm beginning to think i imagined you all along (giving up search).

I'm conclusion, meets a girl at a bar, only gets her name, goes looking for her in different clubs: 'rusty hook, battleship', then left with a girl who agrees to be called by the name

This is a classic tale of boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, girl doesnt come around here no more, boy searches for girl, boy settles for girl's sister (who is quite alright with that scenario). Nothing more deep than that!

I think, he had recently broken up with a girl, and he thinks he sees her everywhere he goes. He asks each of the girls if he could call them his ex's name. At the end he finds his ex's sister, and she lets him call her anything he wants... I guess he ends up getting off with her ;)
