Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

Chorus
I'll fly away, fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

Chorus
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

-------Instrumental-----------

Oh. How glad and happy when we meet
I'll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I'll fly away

Chorus
I'll fly away, fly away Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away.

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

Chorus
I'll fly away, fly away Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

    We heard albert brumley's son interpret this as the writer was a slave picking cotton and one day looked up in the sky and said, some day i'll fly away from all this.

    This life is only a shadow of what is to come in heaven. When there we will really see all that god intended for this life before sin entered the world and corrupted the plan.

    This song is about leaving earth for heaven - it seems like it could very possibly have been written by a slave. The metaphor of being freed from chains could apply literally to being freed from slavery, as well as symbolically as being freed from the slavery of sin to eternal life.
