Of course, i could be way off, but i think this song tells the story of a guy who loved a girl, but found it difficult to cope with the world. He would think about (or perhaps fantasize about) suicide in order to comfort himself. (like the dentist effect: you're at the dentist, and you're getting your teeth drilled, and you tell yourself it's almost over, it's almost over, because you can endure a whole lot more pain when you can look up and see an ending. )
Then one day, the girl dies. The guy has barely been able to deal with day-to-day life, and now this totally destroys everything he knows of the world. He is pushed to the brink of suicide, feeling that he has no choice; then, he says no, and refuses to be so weak. He is ashamed of himself, and promises to never trust or love again, so that he will never again be made so weak and vulnerable.
