I was actually thinking it was about a couple where the girl decided to commit suicide. She left a note - she was flying off the edge of the road - he heard her screaming out loud - he's dealing with the mourning - he can't handle losing her.
However these lyrics: "I know we're hanging at the end of the rope / We've flown too high / Maybe swung too low" make me think that perhaps it is just a breakup.
