The four green fields are the four provinces of Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht, with the fourth one still in bondage being that part f Ulster considered s Northern Ireland and under British rule.
The fine old woman is Erin or Ireland, and her sons are the generations of Irish people who have 'fought and died' for a free and united Ireland.
