I believe it means that someone she loved, committed suicide. Why do I say this? Because I think of my brother who did, and these lyrics tell the story of someone in horrible pain. And, although you loved, it was not in a way that could help or, I just didn't see. And, her lyric: "Now I am bound by the life you left behind." That, Is where the truth lies. And, that, Is where I am.
