Although she was only young, in comparison with the singer, "the hope that she had" were hopes for her own freedom to live her life on her own terms, in peace. At this point she can't love or commit to anyone more than that. "The hope that she had Was much stronger than the loves she felt for me. This is carrying on from the first explanation I wrote.

She was a woman who was passionate about her profession and her inability to settle anywhere. "The woman that she was drove her on with desperation". She is not a victim, she's a woman trying to live a good life. Her husband is an escaped murderer on the run. He killed a man he mistakenly thought was Joanne's lover and vows to kill her. "The hopeless situation as he is a felon and plans to kill her so she keeps running" Every time she thinks she has escaped he finds her. The police will hunt him down, but it's just a matter of whether they'll catch him before he kills her. Just a matter of time. The time that made them both run.
