This song is about the romantic notion of a dangerous swamp people, presumably in Louisiana or western Florida. These people abide by no law but their own, despise and fear outsiders, and protect their ways and lands with lethal force. While highly backcountry and poor, these folk are nonetheless highly effective enforcers. To those who trespass or intend harm, a visit is a terminal mistake, a one-way ticket to the grave. They are said to be of the swamp, and express no desire to leave their harsh abode. These people from the swamp drink, sing, dance, play folk music and bluegrass, and have s* round the clock. Hence there are many children to these clans. While somewhat culturally ignorant and uneducated, the men, women, and children are all proficient at homebuilding, hunting, fishing, and fighting. The skill with acquiring, maintaining, and shooting guns is the infamous talent, as tourists have been shot from distances in excess of 400 yards in thick forests, without formal sights.
