Since he's in a nightmare-coma thing, it makes sense that no one else would be there, therefore no one would be able to hear his cry for help. They're close behind could be referring to the fact that they are literally right behind you, on your bed. If you remember how the room is set up in all the minigames, then you'd remember that the plus toys are right next to the bed, thus they're by my side.
