This song seems to suggest having a one-sided relationship and enjoying the power it gives you. You are well-aware that someone is madly in love with you and you love the attention (sometimes) and you just can't stop yourself from taking advantage of them. There is a compulsive desire to push them to their limits and manipulate them excessively because you can. The aftermath leaves you feeling mean because you know you are repeatedly breaking their heart (for the fun of it) but love is blind and the lovestruck partner is oblivious to the possibility that the feeling is not reciprocated, after all, you spend so much time with them.

Ugly Little Dreams is a reminder to all of us of just how ineffective human conditioning is. No wonder were all going nuts - trying to be something that we are not. We are taught to say and do this, and to look and act like this, and to own and desire this, etc, etc. And then when you think others seem to have it all, you realise just how damn miserable they are - the proverbial "money doesn't buy happiness" situ. Brilliant lyrics.
