Maybe something made him leave the band, like when he left, if he even cared about the band and cared about the times. It's just basically 'What happened to you?!'
From what I've heard, this song is about Ben Harper, a former member of the band. Ben was the guitarist in the band, but he quit. Which could explain "When five becomes four" - When Ben left, there were only four members left.
