I know it's not your fault, but I'm a locked door
And inside, I'm a mess by someone before
And I wish that I, I could find a key
To unlock all the things that you want us to be

Let me open up and start again,
But there's a safe around my heart
I don't know how to let you in,
That's what keeps us apart

And that's why I need time.
I said I need you,
I need you to understand, you, you, you (x2)

Call up the locksmith, tell him we need him quick
We've got a million keys, none of them seem to fit
While you're on the phone, call up the clocksmith,
Cuz I could use some time, even the slightest bit

Let me open up and start again,
And break this safe around my heart
I don't know how to let you in,
And that's what keeps us apart

And that's why I need time
I said I need you
I need you to understand, you, you, you (x2)

I'm thinking now's the time,
Maybe it's time to go, if I gave you my heart, be gentle,
I'm tired of laying low, lets give the world a show
And when you know, you know, (Ohhh)
And when you know, you know, you know(Ohhh)
And when you know, you know, you know, you know (Ohhh)

And that's why I need time
I said I need you,
I need you to understand, you, you, you (x2)
I need you to understand (x4)
I need you (x3)
I need you, you, you

He loves her and wants to be with her but can never find the time, she is always running through his mind thats why he explains himself to her throughout the lyrics by giving her hope that he needs her/you but also telling her that he is guarded bc of someone before her and yet he still needs her

This song means everything to me i mean its saying it's hard to open a door to someone when the door is already lock and the person that locked it has the key. I related because right now i cant open up to my boyfriends because of a girl i was in love with but now the door is slowly opening to him and i'm starting to open up i mean the girl may have broken my heart but in time he's going to fix and because of this song i'm starting to love him more and more everyday

I can relate tho this song much more than any other song. To me, the song is more complex than it seems at first. It's about a guy WANTING to be with the girl who wants to be with him too. But he can't because he's not ready. Forcing it isn't the right thing to do. He doesn't want to lose her, because he knows she's the one...but he's saying give him some time to get over the one that broke his heart, so he can really give his all. He doesn't know how to trust that he won't get hurt again. It's giving hope to her because he isn't saying he doesn't want to be with her, he's just saying he's not ready. He wishes he could be everything she wants. Although he WANTS to, he doesn't know how to let her in all the way, yet. If she can understand that he needs her to be there for him, and just be patient, they can really be a great thing when the time is right. I love this song. It's kind of sad, but it makes perfect sense.
