Another day
I call and never speak
And you would say,
"Nothing's changed at all"

And I can't feel
Much hope for anything
If I won't be there
To catch you if you fall

Again (again we fail)
It seems we meet (meet and meant)
In the spaces (spaces safe)
In between ('tween intent)

You always say (said too much)
"Won't be long" (long been gone)
No, but something's always wrong

Another game
Of putting things aside
As if we'll come
Back to them sometime

A brace of hopes (abrasive hopes)
Of pride
Of innocence (and pride in innocence)

And you would say
Something has gone wrong

Again (again we fail)
It seems we meet (make amends)
In the spaces (wend our way)
In between ('tween intent)

You always say (looking back)
"Won't be long" (not moving on)
Oh, but something's always wrong

Yeah, eh, heh, eh
Yeah, eh, heh, eh, heh

Yeah, eh, heh, eh
Yeah, eh, heh, eh, heh

And again (again we fail)
It seems we meet (make amends)
In the spaces (wend our way)
In between (between intent)

You always say (said too much)
"Won't be long" (long been gone)
Oh, but something's always wrong

Something's always wrong
Something's always wrong

Yeah, eh, heh, eh
Yeah, eh, heh, eh, heh

Yeah, eh, heh, eh
Yeah, eh, heh, eh, heh

Yeah, eh, heh, eh
Yeah, eh, heh, eh, heh...

More or less sadly I think the end of a relationship or a badly damaged relationship. Calling and never speaking is about holding back the things you truly want to say or feel inside. Not having or finding the words to express your feelings or express them in a way that's received well by your partner that thinks they know what your going to say before you say it anyway, so nothing's changed at all.
Not feeling hope and thoughts of not being there seems to me to be the statement of a codependent with fear of giving up on their partner.
The chorus is a conflict of the two sides of the relationship itself. While intentions are good, the connection is badly damaged. The variations of the chorus harmonies paint the picture of the partner not being forgiving of past arguments or being able to solve problems and move forward. In between the challenges and ongoing conflict though there are glimmers of hope for what the one partner is needing from the relationship. The other partner is witholding or holding back something though whether that be affection, openness or even intimacy. The one waits for the other holding on because it won't be long, but something's always wrong and gets in the way of the connection and relationship.
A brace of hopes (abrasive hopes) is a great play on words for the two conflicted sides of this relationship. In saying that it (whatever it's that's being held back) won't be long, too much is said as far as things that can't be taken back. Ugly things perhaps fueled by the one partners lack of ability to move on from past issues and make amends.
