Tim Minchin – Not Perfect lyrics

This is my Earth
And I live in it
It's one third dirt and two thirds water
And it rotates and revolves through space
At rather an impressive pace
And never even messes up my hair
And here's the really weird thing
The force created by it's spin
Is the force that stops the chaos flooding in

This is my Earth
And it's fine
It's where I spend the vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect

This is my country
And I live in it
It's pretty big and nice to walk on
And the bloke who runs my country
Has built a demagoguery
And taught us to be fearful and boring
And the weirdest thing is that he is
Conservative of politics
But really rather radical of eyebrows

This is my country
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect

This is my house
And I live in it
It's made of cracks and photographs
We rent it off a guy who bought it from a guy
Who bought it from a guy
Whose granddad left it to him
And the weirdest thing is that this house
Has locks to keep the baddies out
But they're mostly used to lock ourselves in

This is my house
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect, but it's mine

This is my body
And I live in it
It's thirty-one and six months old
It's changed a lot since it was new
It's done stuff it wasn't built to do
I often try to fill it up with wine
And the weirdest thing about it is
I spend so much time hating it
But it never says a bad word about me

This is my body
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect

This is my brain
And I live in it
It's made of love and bad song lyrics
It's tucked away behind my eyes
Where all my screwed up thoughts can hide
Cause God forbid I hurt somebody
And the weird thing about a mind
Is that every answer that I find
Is the basis of a brand new cliche

This is my brain
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect
I'm not quite sure I've worked out how to work it
It's not perfect, but it's mine
But it's mine

The song is about a few things at once. Firstly, it's about perspective: notice how each verse gets smaller and smaller in scope. We're all individuals, but we all live together on the same planet. Secondly, it's about accepting what you have instead of worrying about what you don't. Nothing is perfect--not you, not your body, not your house, not your country, not the Earth--but it's what we have, so we need to work with it.

Lastly, and potentially most importantly, it's about self-esteem and self-acceptance. Lines like "The weirdest thing about [my body] is I spend so much time hating, but it never says a bad word about me" is about poor self-image. The entire last verse is highly profound. "It's tucked away behind my eyes, where all my screwed-up thoughts can hide, 'cause God forbid I hurt somebody." That's what it's like to live with anxiety: constantly thinking that you are not worthy of letting yourself out, worried that what you want to say or do will hurt, annoy, anger, or upset others, etc. "I'm not quite sure I've worked out how to work it" is in reference to never being quite able to completely deal with the effects of mental illness like anxiety--never being able to be "at ease" with the difference between your thoughts and your desires and your actions. At the same time, he ends with the same sentiment he's repeated throughout the song, only this time applied to the brain: "It's not perfect, but it's mine"--in other words, your brain might be screwed up, but it's the only one you've got, so all you can do is live with it and try to accept it.

As someone with clinical anxiety disorder, this song always makes me tear up, even just reading the lyrics now, and even though I've heard it a hundred times. So beautiful, so profound, and so touching.
