The Platters – The Great Pretender lyrics

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Pretending I'm doing well
My need is such
I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I play the game but to my real shame
You've left me to dream all alone

Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown

Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're...
Pretending that you're still around

Its a story of a truly nice guy living in a world full of shallow, useless, arrogant, that just go about theirs days and see nothing but whats in front of him always using one another to get a head in life. He has maybe lost a loved on the only one whom he could actually be real with, and now shes gone, so all he can do is put on a fake smile and give out friendly laughter when how he feels is the opposite of what he shows. Because living in a world of shallow people all you can do is act the same as them so that you don't upset the balance of their idiocy and simple meaningless lives.
