I can see the glowing lights
I can see them every night
Really not that far away
I could be there in a day

I wonder if you live there still
I kinda think you always will
If I tried you'd probably be
Hard to find

What I feel now about you then
I'm just glad I can explain
You're beautiful and close and young
In those ways we were the same

There's a lot I've not forgotten
I let go of other things
If I tried they'd probably be
Hard to find

They can all
Just kiss off into the air
They can all
Just kiss off into the air

I don't know why we had to lose
The ones who took so little space
They're still waiting for the years
To cover what we can't erase

I'm not holding out for you
I'm still watching for the signs
If I tried you'd probably be
Hard to find

They can all
Just kiss off into the air
They can all
Just kiss off into the air

This song is the definition of elusive. Although it was the last verse that first caught my ear, on closer inspection the first is all encompassing, in the vague, non-committal, perfect way The National so excel at.
Each night I seem to find a new meaning for 'the glowing lights'. Firstly I saw it as the 'crossing over' lights, flashing before one's eyes before death. It expresses a longing for the end, it could be so easy (I could get there in a day) etc- the music has a beautiful weightlessness to it that echoes this, the second verse could describe an idealistic afterlife, with the ever realistic and hard hitting, 'it would be hard to find', grounding us, painfully.
But perhaps he's speaking simply of the literal city lights, winking in the distance, or perhaps over the water, perhaps her apartment.
A metaphor; the lights of hope? The cruel, misleading glow of will o' the wisp? The rest of the song, although obvious to an extent, relies on this one verse to tell us the whole story. Simple and poignant.

He's definitely talking about the only true love he had and wishing he fought for her more. He doesn't think he will find her not in the physical but in the way they were together, he didn't forget anything about her he lived his life only craving her and now he knows he can't go back to living because the only way he knows how to live his life is by searching for her and making her his, he's willing to everything because he has truly only loved her and wants her no needs her to know it. He knows he will get her back because they are meant to bed and sorry it took so long to relies it.
