We became the parade on the streets that we once cleaned,
Expendable soldiers smiling at anything
Raised on a feeling our lives will have meaning eventually

We were once the answer and then you discover
Your actually just one thing after another and
What was the question and why was the lesson so deafening.

This all that matters now
And that was all that happened anyhow
You can look back but don't stare
Maybe I can love you out of there
And when I went away what I forgot to say was
All I have to say eight letter three words one meaning

And outside forces didn't make it easy so I thought I'd go before you leave me
Self preservation was no explanation for anything
Oh but the truth is more than we'll ever comprehend I've just started to understand my friend all of that distance cause I fell in love with the enemy

This all that matters now
And that was all that happened anyhow
You can look back but don't stare
Maybe I can love you out of there
And when I went away what I forgot to say was all I had to say eight letter three words one meaning x2
At last we meet on no man's land just footprints in the sand
We meet on no man's land at last
And when I went away what I forgot to say was all I had to say 8 letters 3 words one meaning x2
One meaning, just one meaning, one meaning.

This song is written by robbie williams. It is about how he battled in those early years of take that but he really always loved them but just couldn't say it. He left them before they left him. My favourite line is "you can look back but don't stare" so appropriate for rob who has always battled depression. People just see rob as an entertainer but his lyrics mean so much to so many.

To me, the "eight letters" are "i am sorry" because it seems most applicable for the song and the idea of regret and redemption.

"and when i went away what i forgot to say/was all i had to say" - this sounds something like an apology, sorry for leaving (supposedly about robbie's leaving, prematurely).

I love this song because of the debates it causes on it's meaning. 'i love you' is the obvious and the one that everything thinks the 'eight letters, three words, one meaning' is saying, and i agree because it probably was written with that in mind. But i love that it could also mean 'i am sorry' which also fits the 8 letters, 3 words, 1 meaning. And the other lyrics of the song. Either way - or both ways - the song is amazingly powerful and beautiful mixed perfectly with being sad

This song hit me immediately as delivered from my father (who passed away) to me. It was a difficult relationship, but always underscored by fierce and loyal love and pride in each other. There were never outward shows of emotion, and "i love you" was never said, until i did, when he was on his deathbed. He never had a chance to answer, so i take from this song what i hope and believe was his response. Even aside from my personal interpretation, this has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and it is sung truly in keeping with that intense beauty. Znz
