Supertramp – If Everyone Was Listening lyrics
The actors and jesters are here
The stage is in darkness and clear
For raising the curtain
And no-one's quite certain whose play it is
How long ago, how long
If only we had listened then.
If we'd known just how right we were going to be.
For we dreamed a lot
And we schemed a lot
And we tried to sing of love before the stage fell apart.

If everyone was listening you know
There'd be a chance that we could save the show
Who'll be the last clown
To bring the house down?
Oh no, please no, don't let the curtain fall

Well, what is your costume today?
Who are the props in your play?
You're acting a part which you thought from the start
Was an honest one.
Well how do you plead?
An actor indeed!
Go re-learn your lines,
You don't know what you've done
The finale's begun.

If everyone was listening you know
There'd be a chance that we could save the show,
Who'll be the last clown
To bring the house down?
Oh no, please no, don't let the curtain fall.

Life... allusions to Shakespeare: all the World's a stage, etc.,

we've got so much to say, things missed, forgotten, left unsaid and undone. Realizing too late that we're alive, once we understand what to do with it--to be ourselves, fully. Personal anecdotal references aside.

All great art is universal, relevant to all, but rising from the particular events of one life.

I also came here to learn the meaning of this beautiful song that I have known every word to since age 12 and decided that I should know what it means once and for all. Well so much for that. I believe it's "Well how do you plead, an actor indeed? Go re-learn your lines! By the way.
My guess is that it's a break up song with all parties desperately holding on.

I actually came here to find the meaning to this song, not to give it. But since there is not meaning here I'll give it a go.
I remember listening to this song at school shortly after it came out and we talked in very knowing terms about its meaning - concluding that it related to the early history of the band - and a car crash which nearly destroyed the group. I've never found any reference anywhere to a car crash subsequently so I'm guessing we must have made it up.
I still play this song on the piano (at age 50, but still young compared to Roger Hodgson who is 10 years older) and ponder the meaning. On the face of it, it is about a stage show which is failing - but the emotion in the music indicates a deeper meaning. Maybe not a car crash - but perhaps a tribute to the two founding members who left before the band hit the big time.
