Yes this is a spiritual song, the place in the son is jesus christ who is the hope in this old troubled world. Stevie said he has been rollin since birth. God is the one who gives life. There is hope for all who call on jesus christ as their savior who is the son that he is talking about. He is not talking about the sun in the sky.

This song is very special to me, as it played on the radio just before my Mum died after a long illness. I was on the way to the hospital. A Place in the Sun was her favourite T. V. Programme, and the song said to me that she was trying to get free, to move on and be at peace. She never really believed in God, but I feel the lyrics were saying to me that she now knew there was a 'place in the sun' for everyone, and that I needn't worry about her or about anything in life. I don't know if the song was intended to have a spiritual meaning, but it certainly did for me and got me through a difficult time.
