Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Her lace spread out before me, as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breath has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything?
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside
And I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin around my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away

And now my bitter hands chained to broken glass
Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll ever be...yeah...

Uh huh...uh huh...ooh...
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be the sun
In somebody else's skies, but why
Why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

Black is the greatest and saddest ballad of all time. If you've ever been truly broken by having the purest element of love taken from you without choice, then you relate to this song. This song is genius in that it reconstructs specific moments of this dude's memory of a love that once was. She was his star, or his sun that he revolved around, except you get the sense that its more than that from “ all 5 horizons” or on 5 different planes (like an atom, if you will). What he once held in his hands, so delicate and fragile has left them chaffed in broken glass as his center has been shattered. My god, this song's ability to recount an incredibly picturesque moment in this guy's life while remaining abstract is what gives this song such incredible depth. He comes home to empty sheets of canvas and clay. This is figurative, referring to the memories painted, and love they molded together. Now they’ve been washed in black, and everything in his life is tattooed, unable to remove it, which gives the sense of hopelessness in terms of future love. Even the peaceful laughter of playful children cannot lift this man’s doom, nor disturb the twisted thoughts come, thoughts of ending it all?... One might if they were so hopeless.
