Spike Jones – Cocktails For Two lyrics

Cocktails For Two
Spike Jones

In some secluded rendezvous,
That overlooks the avenue,
With someone sharing a delightful chat,
Of this and that,
And cocktails for two.

As we enjoy a cigarette,
To some exqiuisite chansonette,
Two hands are sure to slyly meet beneath a serviette,
With cocktails for two.

My head may go reeling,
But my heart will be o-be-di-ent,
With in-tox-i-cat-ing kisses,
For the principal in-gre-di-ent,

Most any afternoon at five,
We'll be so glad we're both alive,
Then maybe fortune will complete her plan,
That all began
With cocktails for two

A music fan approaching 90 years old, I've always liked this song. Sung both melodically and the Spike Jones version. Yet, somehow, I've always erred in the second verse's wording by saying "IN some exquisite chansonnette" instead of " TO some exquisite chansonnette", thinking it referred to some sort of intimate cafe, perhaps featuring music, singing, etc. Then, the other morning I decided to look up the full and true meaning of "chansonnette"!
And found it meant a "little tune". My curiosity led me to a most delightful video of a performance of Yves Montand singing. Of course, "La Chansonnette"! Look it up - you'll like it. His audience sure did!

"Chansonnet" meant a "little song" , "tune" or similar (tho' Merriam-Webster does add " often a cabaret or cafe song" ) -- but thought it might have additional meaning, so suddenly had the urge to look up it's definition. Besides, I was primarily intent on telling how my curiosity after so many years led me to discover the very delightful rendition of a song by Yves Montand!
