(chorus:)
Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace

chorus

So raise the candles high cause if you
Don't we could stay black against the night
Oh raise them higher again and if you
Do we could stay dry against the rain

chorus

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace
Some came to sing, some came to pray
Some came to keep the dark away

So raise the candles high
Cause if you don't we could stay
Black against the sky
Oh oh raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain

chorus

A very powerful lyric sung by a powerful voice.

When i remember the vietnam war, this comes 1st to mind.
    Just haunts me still.

Got the buddha 45 when i was 10, rode to the record store on my bicycle -
Watch her 1991 concert performance of it, absolutely mesmerizing . . .

It's not about partying with candles.

It was at a time when soldiers were dying in viet nam for nothing. The disease was war. Lay down your weapons...

"Lay down, lay down, LAY it all down" are the proper lyrics

This song is about Melanie's experience at Woodstock. She performed in the evening, as light rain was falling, and the crowd held up candles.
