I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they're blowing
As free as the wind
Hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
More than this you know there's nothing
More than this tell me one thing
More than this ooh there is nothing
It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like a dream in the night
Who can say where we're going
No care in the world
Maybe I'm learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
More than this you know there's nothing
More than this tell me one thing
More than this no, there's nothing
More than this nothing
More than this
More than this nothing
To me this song is about facing profound questions with no answers and the forlorn that accompanies the attempt to know. Loss, with the question "why"; hurt with no sense of comfort ahead. Lost with little hope. Yet a flicker of light teases the senses and engages the mind and spirit to keep moving forward. The human experience of suffering and eventual recovery.
This song is a study in contrast. Its being as free as the wind, and yet like the sea on the tide having no way of turning. Its about having no care in the world when it involves the thing that means the most. Its about not knowing the future, yet knowing the outcome will inevitably be same no matter what. Its about falling in love.
I believe he's saying that we start out our lives innocent and having fun but through learning we realize that life can go in many directions, like the leaves and dreams. We as humans are free as the wind as hopefully we learn along the way, although what we come to understand is that some things in life are changeable but some things like the sea on the tide are not. More than this we as humans know nothing about what's beyond our life but through faith Ferry may be saying there is the hope ("More than this tell me one thing"). What though is the one thing he wants to be told?
