Prince – Purple Rain lyrics

I never meant to cause you any sorrow.
I never meant to cause you any pain.
I only wanted to one time see you laughing.
I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain.

Purple rain, purple rain.
Purple rain, purple rain.
Purple rain, purple rain.

I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain.

I never wanted to be your weekend lover.
I only wanted to be some kind of friend.
Baby I could never steal you from another.
It's such a shame our friendship had to end.

Purple rain, purple rain.
Purple rain, purple rain.
Purple rain, purple rain.

I only wanted to see you underneath the purple rain.

Honey I know, I know, I know times are changing.
It's time we all reach out for something new,
That means you too.
You say you want a leader,
But you can't seem to make up your mind.
I think you better close it,
And let me guide you to the purple rain.

Purple rain, purple rain.
Purple rain, purple rain.

If you know what I'm singing about up here.
C'mon raise your hand.

Purple rain, purple rain.

I only want to see you, only want to see you.

I view this song from the perspective of the personal divinity (consciousness) inside everyone and lyrics directed toward the physical body/mind of self. The color purple has been associated with royalty, ambition and power for thousands of years, around when they started making Tyrian dye out of the spiny dye-murex snail. I won't get into it but the dye making process is very ironic when related to this song the way I feel it. Purple represents several meanings but a few are creativity, extravagance, wisdom, peace, mystery, magic etc. It represents different meanings but they're all relatively positive at first glance. The beginning lyrics refer to the pain everyone has at some point in life which is unavoidable and varying degrees. Nobody is exempt from the ups and downs but once aware of the lessons in everything, a state of bliss(purple rain) becomes present. Because of that awareness, of a blessing in nearly every circumstance, laughing will become first response when previously you got angry at someone or yourself before you realized its not luck or coincidence, "I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain". Next verse describes how this state of bliss (purple rain) can't just be a weekend ritual or something you give more value to then the connection with your true inner self (consciousness). Can't "steal from another" cause whether aware or not it's what makes up your personality and peace of mind which gives us our uniqueness so consciousness is always present just different levels of awareness. Once the ego takes over, the relationship isn't as strong and becomes more distant between physical self (ego) and true self (consciousness). You start to blame others for your problems and think negatively about yourself and others. Some tough times will hopefully weaken the ego and realize a need for change or circulate new energy. "It's time we all reach out for something new. That means you too." This is an example of consciousness guiding someone rather then directed from person to person cause the wording suggests change doesn't happen by thinking others need to change but by knowing you need to change the way you think before actions result in change. "You say you want a leader" is the ego not realizing it needs to become the leader, they prefer, in order to create the desired change in their reality." You can't seem to make up your mind" too much mind static worried about past and anxious about future disconnected with the only place the true inner self exists, the now. Thinking of yourself negatively also creates doubt in your mind. Closing your mind removes the static of unnecessary thoughts(meditating, being in the "zone"), which allows consciousness to play a bigger role in creating your reality. When fully aware will guide you to a state of constant bliss (purple rain). Everything associated with the meaning of purple will be abundant or "rain" into your life in some form and not necessarily a materialized version when the self and consciousness are fully integrated. No, I don't think it's a coincidence that purple doesn't come from a single wavelength but rather a mixture of colors deciphered by the mind as purple. As consciousness can't be physically seen but changing the way you look at things can change the way things you look and increase awareness allowing you to see and feel the purple rain I want to see you bathing in. You'll see it when you believe it.

I had been hearing this song for a good number of years hearing only a song I liked, but really never listening to the message. It's comes across as a simplistic song with easy lyrics and great guitar backing, but it's fairly deep if you tear it apart. It took a purple rain moment for me to grasp that concept. It was an age old story; a stormy fight with a loved one where mean words were tossed back and forth before I stormed away and drove off. I didn't go that far when this song came on the radio. I started listening to the words, and a light bulb went off in my brain. I hadn't meant any of those things, and was remorseful. I had to go get that person, and take them to that place where the purple rain falls and heals old wounds. Of course, there is no real purple rain, but there is a place and space for lying down the hurt and letting peace take over, and cleanse and rejuvenate you. If that place were tangible, it would indeed manifest itself as 'Purple Rain'. What this song really says is if you are battle weary and plain tired of the war, just walk away and go to that special place that makes the pain go away, and while you're at it, take that loved one with you.

I see this as a man who wants to love a complicated woman. He is saying to her, I want to love you in the good times and in the bad. I want to love you and make you happy. That's all I ever wanted. I don't care for all the other material things, I don't care for the classical definition of love. I want our story to be unique. Purple Rain is Prince's way of declaring his love for Vanity. He wanted to show Vanity that he wasn't like other guys and that he wanted to make her laugh, to smile, to dance in the rain. He wanted her to see that he was going to do whatever it took to convince her of that. But, as the relationship began to fall apart, he realized that he couldn't do anymore. So he's telling her, that no matter what happened, he just wanted to see her happy and was wishing her the best.
