All we are, for me, is about two lovers who are different from each other. However, only one of the two lovers has realized this difference, "i tried to paint you a picture, the colors were all wrong". The lover knows that they have nothing in common. He even tries to put himself in the place of his lover, but finds out that he can never figure himself in her place. Nevertheless, despite this difference, they are in need of each other. And the lover, finds that whatever the difference between them, things are good the way they are, and that there will be greater pain in breaking up than in accepting the difference. In some way, we are here confronted with the theory of "opposite attracts"!

I see this as not exactly a breakup, but more of a gradual falling out of love or an inability to be together. The two people are convinced that they were meant to be, but slowly realized that it doesn’t fit. Instead of immediately breaking up(we won’t break, we won’t die, it’s just a moment of change)

To me this song is two people realizing that their relationship is changing, and they can either say goodbye or change together. "all we are is everything that's right," they are for each other what they know is right for the other. "all we need, a lovers aliby," they are still in love with each other but they're not quite together, not lovers but so much more than friends. They don't know what to call their relationship, thus needing a "lovers aliby". What ever has heppined won't break them. It doesn't need to be goodbye, just a moment of change. There's even more in the verses but I think this is the main point o the song.

My boyfriend and I broke up a month ago after we went out, twice. He told me this song reminded him of me& us. It means, the girl and him were suppose to be together but he's failed her (time and again). So he's accepting that this time, they won't work out. So he's leaving her (won't say our goodbyes) but will always have feelings for her because if everything they had.

I see this as not exactly a breakup, but more of a gradual falling out of love or an inability to be together. The two people are convinced that they were meant to be, but slowly realized that it doesn’t fit(all we need is a lovers alibi). Instead of immediately breaking up(we won’t break, we won’t die, it’s just a moment of change) they choose instead to go out strong. They aren’t going to say goodbye, they won’t break or die, they won’t falter or cry over love lost, that have to stay strong until the very end.

The other thing I can see is a sibling singing to another. The older is leaving their family behind for something more lively, but more dangerous, and the younger sibling is forced to be strong. They sing about how even though they won’t meet again, even though they can’t see how the older could be brave enough to go, they still are connected until the end and possibly after.
