I waited 'til I saw the sun
I don't know why I didn't come
I left you by the house of fun
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I'll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road alone

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Something has to make you run
I don't know why I didn't come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

Norah sings about her first love whom she left one day because she saw the sun. The sun (light of day) represents her desire to date and learn of other men. Norah did not want to catch the tears of her first love whose heart was broken when she told him of her plan to go away. Norah's heart was drenched in the wine with the infatuation of other men, but non could match that of her first true love. The endless sea represents the life she gave up where she knew she could die in ecstasy. Instead she would die a bag of bones all alone. Norah doesn't understand why she left her first love, she just knew something drove her to. Norah doesn't know why she didn't come to her love who filled her life with fun. Norah heart is empty as a drum because she lost her true love because she did not come back to him.

Norah loves beaches. There's a beach in this number, and another in rosie's lullaby. In both songs, the persona is alone on the shore and sad. In both songs, there's a sense of smallness, as the character looks out into vastness. In both songs, there's a desire to fly away into the sky.

Did norah find herself in this situation once?
