Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – Buy For Me The Rain lyrics
Buy for me the rain, my darling, buy for me the rain;
Buy for me the crystal pools that fall upon the plain.
And I'll buy for you a rainbow and a million pots of gold.
Buy it for me now, babe, before I am too old.

Buy for me the sun, my darling, buy for me the sun;
Buy for me the light that falls when day has just begun.
And I'll buy for you a shadow to protect you from the day.
Buy it for me now, babe, before I go away.

Buy for me the robin, darling, buy for me the wing;
Buy for me a sparrow, almost any flying thing.
And I'll buy for you a tree, my love, where a robin's nest may grow.
Buy it for me now, babe, the years all hurry so.

I cannot buy you happiness, I cannot by you years;
I cannot buy you happiness, in place of all the tears.
But I can buy for you a gravestone, to lay behind your head.
Gravestones cheer the living, dear, they're no use to the dead.

    This song speaks of the passage of time, of the transience of life, of the inevitability of death. To say that it has anything specifically to do with "the Baby Boom generation" is to ignore its larger meaning. This is a song for every time, for every generation. be it 1,000 years ago o 1,000 years from now.

    Has baby boom generation's rebellion theme against materialism. Disaffection from a life that could only be supported by more war(s)- Vietnam context. Returning vets came back to alien culture that they did not know, nor did they remember. And they were also no longer known or remembered. Grew up too early. Grew up too far away. The joy that once came from innocence was lost to them. Nothing here endures. & they did not want to be endured, either.

    This song represents the marriage vows at a wedding, as tradition would have it. She gives him the reason for life, he gives her the means to build a life. She gives him a means by which to see the world, he protects her from that world. She gives him children, he provides for his family. In the end, neither can make it worth the effort, but they can stick it out together.
    It used to play after Market to Market when I was a child.
    I love this song. It is simple, but it is deep. And it really hits the futility of some human endeavors with "Gravestones cheer the living dear, they're no use to the dead.".
