Natalie Imbruglia – Torn lyrics

I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm, he came around like
He was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
Well you couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know, don't seem to care
What your heart is for
No I don't know him anymore

There's nothin' where we used to lie
Conversation has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's fine

I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I'm shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake
And I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune teller's right
I should have seen just what was there
And not some holy light
But you crawled beneath my veins
And now I don't care
I have no luck
I don't miss it all that much
There's just so many things
That I can't touch

I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I'm shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake
And I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn

There's nothing where he used to lie
My inspiration has run dry
That's what is goin' on
Nothin's right

I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake
And I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn

For me the song is about a girl who met and fell in love with a guy that is like the same guy who broke her heart before. The guy is a little late to fix the girls heart being torn by the past relationship. Haha, well literally that's how understand the song.

The girl has been scorned by the boy she really wanted, maybe a misunderstanding. She wanted to lose her virginity to him, but for some reason he baulked at the opportunity. He's now come back to her, but too late. She has given herself to her "second choice", and he was not really what she wanted, and she is upset he was the one to be with her, this first time. Now the original boy has come back, and she is lying naked and torn on the floor - he's just a little bit late. Sad story. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and this boy lost out on something that could have been great.

This song is about a girl who fell for a total poser. He pretended to be one kind of guy, but underneath he was a monster. When she realizes that she's been total had by the loser she is bound and naked and ashamed, he used her, and then left, maybe said he'd be back, but he's a little late and she's thinking he won't be back. So she's lost all faith in ever meeting the real deal. This song breaks my heart because just about every girl in the world feels this way at some point in her reomantic life. Usualy I think when it's her "first time".

What the hell is "I am cold and I am shamed" supposed to mean? You don't say "I am shamed" like some idiot box "satisfaction" argument from out of 18th-19th Century aristocratic "fairness" neurosis. I can understand "I am cold", but you don't get to decide that "I am shamed" like some stuck up twat saying "I am angry", you don't decide you're angry and you don't decide that you're shamed! Get over yourself! Decide you're going to be worth something and shut up while you're doing it!

She's already given herself sexually, perhaps for the first time ever, and naively to a man who glittered on the surface but left her. Needy. "I don't miss it all that much" could be construed to sound as though she is trying to convince herself the physical presence of his body isn't important to her. Why is she 'lying naked on the floor' if that is not how she remembers last being with him?
