Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man lyrics
Weep for yourself, my man,
You'll never be what is in your heart
Weep little lion man,
You're not as brave as you were at the start
Rate yourself and rake yourself,
Take all the courage you have left
Waste it on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear
?

Didn't I, my dear

Tremble for yourself, my man,
You know that you have seen this all before
Tremble little lion man,
You'll never settle any of your scores
Your grace is wasted in your face,
Your boldness stands alone among the rank
Now learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I my dear

Didn't I my dear

Ahhhhh...

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I my dear

It was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I my dear

Didn't I my dear

We all see something different ... in art, and in poetry ... even in the specific legalistic language of a contract drawn up by lawyers! Lol ... But having had a brilliant son, who wound up having difficulties in life and ended up killing himself, this song hurts like hell every time I hear it.

if I am being 100% honest, and it could just be because I'm in a production of the Wizard of Oz at the moment, it seems to me like this is written about the lion from the Wizard of Oz. I mean, think about it. "weep little lion man" "Tremble little lion man" "You're not as brave as you were from the start" "take all the courage you have left and waste it on fixing the problems in your own head" it sounds a lot to me like the cowardly lion. It could just be my take on it, I don't know. But it definitely defines a lot of attributes the cowardly lion has. It seems like it might be from the perspective of Dorothy looking back and say he lost his courage again and started to give up and Dorothy thinks it's her fault because she left them to go back home.

Or it could be this is written using the lion as a symbol for a person in the writer's life who is probably cowardly and used to be bold. That's a possibility. But I definitely think it has something to do with the cowardly lion. just my opinion though.

The "little lion man", the person being sung to, has been through a rough patch. Maybe he's got psychological problems. Maybe he was just a jerk. I don't know.
The singer knew the person, and didn't pull through when they were needed. Singer is teasing the person about his problems, but at the same time, the singer is acknowledging that he/she is partly responsible for the person's problems now.
The singer is trying to encourage the little lion man to hold on and not give up.

I thought the song was about someone like say a father who is singing to his young son. Perhaps the father really messed things up and there was a divorce etc. And so he's telling the young son that things are not his fault, it was the father's fault, and that it was his young heart that was on the line.

I believe this song represents re-encarnation and human ego. We are all blinding by so much materialism and problems we have created. When we go back to when we were born, or even before that, we didn't see possibiliy, we seen impossibility. Then that was labelled as imagination and then human ego takes over. Being older we doubt, we bicker, we don't believe in anything beyond our own eyes. Some people don't even believe in the soul. Quit fretting on everything and maybe your dreams will come true.
