Motionless In White – Black Damask (The Fog) lyrics

Now what have I become?
It's more black in my heart.
Than the ice in your lungs.

Hail elegance as we revel in the lust of pure destruction.
"Miss Cadaverous", let me light the darkness in your eyes.

I am yours.
Like the stillness of a corpse.
With a heart bound by ache
Though it doesn't beat it breaks.
I am cursed

I sew my eyes shut just to sleep.
We're caught in all the webs we weave
No sonnet for the recently deceased.
They lie awake just to hear you scream

Strip the world and paint it fucking black
Now what have you become?
You once felt like home
Now a ghost in the fog.

The funeral song of misery was played on keys of ivory
"Miss Cadaverous", show me who you really are
In your eyes I am yours
Such a paleness I adore
With a heart bound by pain
Though it doesn't beat it breaks
I am cursed

I sew my eyes shut just to sleep.
We're caught in all the webs we weave
No sonnet for the recently deceased.
They lie awake just to hear you scream

Right here, right now
Burn it fucking down

Oh what a mess I have made of my life
"His arms are around me,
His tongue in my eyes"
Hide my face from the light
"The Spider man is having me for dinner tonight"

I am cursed
Now go back to the start,
I still hear her voice
But she's lost in the fog

I sew my eyes shut just to sleep.
We're caught in all the webs we weave
No sonnet for the recently deceased.
They lie awake just to hear you scream

Strip the world and paint it fucking black

Your "love" is just a frail disguise
To hide the pain behind your eyes
In Lacerated lullabies
We all fall down
Your "love" is just your alibi
The antidote of your demise
In lacerated lullabies
We all fall down.

To put it sweet and simple to me it sounds like he killed his love "more black in my heart than the ice in your lungs" his heart is black because he did something terrible and ice in her lungs is because she is dead and corpses are cold. "You once felt like home now a ghost in the fog" she was alive and made him feel happy but now she is dead. "with a heart bound by ache it doesn't beat it breaks" which is to show he can't be happy for what he's done. The main course I interpret as he can't sleep so he sews them to keep his eyes closed. "We're caught in all the webs we weave" basically like the term digging your hole deeper the more bad things you do the stronger the "web" your caught in is. "No sonnet for the recently deceased" a sonnet is a literary term for writing which has a certain structure and its said out loud so its pretty much to say there is nothing to say of her death. "They lie awake just to hear you scream" like saying demons or something are waiting to hear her die. I also interpret "the spiderman" as death it just makes sense. Strip the world and paint it f**king black" which is saying the world is filled with death. That's only a bit I'm to lazy to write more but yeah once again I think its about him killing his love.

All I can really contribute to this is the face that "His arms are around me and his tongue in my eyes". "The spiderman is having me for dinner tonight" was also used in The Cure's "Lullaby". Which is Smith said to be about a recurring nightmare he had as a child. However to me, this particular MIW song, seems to be more about depression, as death is a common occurrence, and "cadaverous" is to look like a corpse, which can be how depression feels; however I feel that lyrics are similar to poetry in the way that it is open to interpretation and can mean something different to everyone, and that there is no right answer.

I think it's to do with a break up which leads to the person realising he's changed and being upset with himself about what he's become because of the line "what have I become?" being repeated for one thing. I think about break ups because of lines like "your love is just you along" as if she wanted something from him and now he's realised that he's being used and exploited and that the love he thought they had was a lie. The line from "I sew my eyes sh*t just to sleep" to "no sonnet for the recently deceased" suggests to me that he is struggling physically as well as emotionally to deal with the feeling because it's stopping him sleeping and "I lie awake just to hear you scream" suggests he's annoyed with the person for the whole situation and wants to hear them screaming in agony or dead to take it out on them but without doing it himself because otherwise he would have said something more like "I lie awake just to beat you up". "Strip the world and paint it f**king black" is referring to him feeling depressed. Black is seen as a negative colour and so stripping the world and painting it black would be reflecting how he is feeling and taking the situation.

Anyway. This is a great song and who knows? Everything I've written could very well be horribly wrong.
