Jimmy won't you please come home
Where the grass is green and the buffaloes roam
Come see Jimmy your uncle Jim Your auntie Jimmie and your cousin Jim
Come home Jimmy because you need a bath
And your grandpa Jimmy is still gone daft

Now there's buffalo Jim and buffalo Jim
And Jim buffalo now didn't you know
Jim Jim Jimmy its your last cigarette
But there's buffalo piss and it's all kind of wet
Jambo Jimmy you'd better hold your nose
All roads lead to roam with the buffaloes

And the Buffaloes used to say be proud of your name
The Buffaloes used to say be what you are
The Buffaloes used to say roam where you roam
The Buffaloes used to say do what you do

Well you've gotta have a wash but you can't clean your name
You're now called Jimmy you'll be Jimmy just the same
The keys are in a bag in a chest by the door
One of Jimmy's friends has taken the floor
Jimmy won't you please come home
Where the grass is green and the buffaloes roam
Dear old Jimmy you've forgotten you're young
But you can't ignore the buffalo song

And the Buffaloes used to say be proud of your name
The Buffaloes used to say be what you are
The Buffaloes used to say roam where you roam
The Buffaloes used to say do what you do
If you remember you're (unkown / a gnome / a Noam)
Buffaloland will be your home

I'm an old man, but to me it means... Some young men choose to roam away from home with wanderlust. Like the "prodigal son" they leave home and family to "do what they do". These youngsters sometimes forget their roots, extended family, friends and the lifestyle they learned as youths. They need to remember and come home sometime soon. Or, like the buffalo, their family and heritage may face extinction. I heard this group at montreal jazz festival june, 2012 for the first time. Not my idea of jazz but great entertainment and good for the soul.

As a youngster, I see it differently.

When we're young, we are all buffaloes. Proud dreamers who believe we will roam the world forever, and live a different live then the mediocre life.

We're no Jimmy, we're different. We roam where we roam. And if you keep chasing your dreams and visions, in stead of becoming yet another ordinary man, then you remember you're unknown (I believe it is Unknown she sings, not gnome or a Noam). Then you're no Jimmy... Truly, sometimes your life will reek of buffalo-piss (troubles and difficulties) but just hold your nose and keep chasing that dream, that vision.

But in the end, you're called Jimmy and you'll be Jimmy just the same... every youngster will be confronted with responsibilities and will eventually have to settle down and live the ordinary Jimmy-live (eat, work, sleep, repeat). He'll forget he was young and he'll be known as Buffalo Jim, who once used to roam, but has smoked his last cigarette.
Every buffalo Jim has altered his dreams, has changed his life, and has settled down for the quiet life.

Only he who remains truly unknown will be able to call the buffalo land his home.

So eventually sticking to the ideals you had as a youngster may keep you a true buffalo, and not a Buffalo Jim... but the older you get the fewer Unknown buffaloes that surround you. A man who is forever in search for something or someone, who forever is chasing a vision or a dream, is in fact a sad man, who sooner or later finds him alone somewhere in the distant buffalo land... But he has lived no ordinary life.

Being in this life-situation, this is my interpretation of this song... constantly I have to choose between dreams and responsibilities. Do I want to be Unknown or do I want to be Jimmy? Sooner or later I will smoke that last cigarette, sooner or later I'll have forgotten I am/was young and I'll be known as Buffalo Jimmy. The buffalo land we'll never remain my home. But you can have a wash, but you cant clear your name. As a Jimmy I forever will have my memories of being a Buffalo.
