Born in the heat of the desert
My mother died giving me life
Despised and disliked from my father
Blamed for the loss of his wife.

You know Lord, I've been in a prison
For something that I never done
It's been one hill after another
And I've climbed them lord one by one.

But this time, Lord you gave me a mountain
A mountain I may never climb
It isn't a hill any longer
You gave me a mountain this time.

My woman got tired of the hardships
Tired of the grief and the strife
Tired of working for nothing
Tired of being my wife.

She took my one ray of sunshine
She took my pride and my joy.
She took my reason for living
She took my small baby boy.

And this time, you gave me a mountain
A mountain I may never climb
It isn't a hill any longer
You gave me a mountain this time

Marty has given me so much pleasure over the years. Now that my wife of 42 years has left me this song gives me a little strength to go on. Great to hear elvis singing it too.

When my little grandson was a little over 2yrs old his mother took him out of state, it broke my heart, and i felt like the lord had given me a mountain to climb. Every time i hear this song or sing it in my own off key voice it makes me cry. I cannot get through it with out the tears, and i doubt that i will ever get over it.
