I came to town to search for gold
And I brought with me a memory
And I seem to hear the night wind cry,
"Go hang your dreams on the hangin' tree
Your dreams of love that could never be
Hang your faded dreams on the hangin' tree!"

I searched tor gold and I found my gold
And I found a girl who loved just me
And I wished that I could love her too
But I'd left my heart on the hangin' tree
I'd left my heart with a memory
And a faded dream on the hangin' tree.

Now there were men who craved my gold
And meant to take my gold from me
When a man is gone he needs no gold
So they carried me to the hangin' tree
To join my dreams and a memory
Yes they carried me to the hangin' tree.

To really live you must almost die
And it happened just that way with me
They took the gold and set me free
And I walked away from the hangin' tree
I walked away from the hangin' tree
And my own true love, she walked with me!

That's when I knew that the hangin' tree
Was a tree of life, new life for me
A tree of hope, new hope for me
A tree of love, new love tor me
The hangin' tree, the hangin' tree, the hangin' tree!

Marty Robbins did this song first I believe and did a great job, did the background song for the movie also "The Hanging Tree" with Gary Cooper. Then why was Frankie Lane singing the song on the Academy Awards show for the Hanging Tree award instead of Marty Robbins and why wasn't Marty Robbins there at least since he made the song fit the movie. And he was still alive and active then in case someone doesn't know. Certainly a fiasco!

I think it means that a guy is accused of murder so some people found out where him and his true love were going to meet and hung him and when his true love came she saw he was dead and was so awed with fear and anger and sorrow that she thought he told her to flee to safty

Stanza 1: a man was searching for gold and left his "dreams of love that could never be (he loved a girl but for some reason it would not work out)" on a proverbial tree called "the hanging tree". On "the hanging tree" he can put "things" and they will die to him and be void of meaning.
Stanza 2: he finds gold and a girl who truly loves him, but since he left his heart (his love for one girl) on "the hanging tree" he thinks he can't love the new girl.
Stanza 3: some men want his gold and are going to kill him so they take him to "the hanging tree" so he can join his memories he put there, and be dead with them( they might also be actually hanging him on a tree... Double meaning possibly?... ).
Stanza 4: he realizes that if a man is dead, gold has no worth to him, so he gives the men his gold and they let him go. He says [he walked away from "the hangin tree"] twice, so maybe he walked away from the actual tree where they were going to hang him, and from "the hangin tree". This opened his eyes so he could see that his "own true love" was really the new girl and not the one from his past.
Stanza 5: he figures out that "the hangin tree(double meaning...? )" was a tree of life... Not a tree of death. It gave him new life( life without being haunted by his previous love), new hope( he can cope with his past and look towards the future instead), and new love( his "own true love")
~ i don't know if that makes sense, it is kind of hard to explain in words... I could mean a few different things and might have some double meanings... To me it is pretty deep and meaningful! I hope it helped!
